STATE
STEERING COMMITTEE
(Model
Assembly only)
Each Model Assembly
Delegation sends 3 members to serve as delegation representatives to
a youth-run Steering Committee. Members typically have a minimum of
one year experience in the Youth in Government program, although this
is not required. The selection of the State Steering Committee representatives
is determined by each individual delegation. Most delegations elect
representatives to serve on the Steering Committee on their behalf.
The students selected to be a part of the Steering Committee will be
the “communicators” for the delegation – to speak
for the group at a state-wide forum and to bring issues back to the
delegation and keep their colleagues informed on the events, people
and issues from around the state.
The State Steering Committee completes its work over three sessions:
- The first session is the State Steering Committee
meeting. During the meeting, representatives will get a chance to
know each other and approve criteria for officer filing status and
elect officers to preside over and administer the
State Convention.
- The second session is the State Steering Committee
retreat – an overnight session held over a weekend at a YMCA
camp. During this session, the members spend time learning organization
and leadership skills that they can take back to their local delegations
to help prepare their colleagues for the Youth in Government experience.
Steering Committee members also make important decisions at this retreat
to establish the rules and schedule for the State Convention.
- The third session follows the Steering Committee
retreat by a few weeks and consists of a one-day meeting, at which
members will review Convention Petition Excuse policies, canvass the
elected officer filings and make any last-minute planning decisions
for the State Convention and Model Assembly sessions.
The State Steering Committee
also assists the State Office Staff with Model Assembly Session planning
and may make recommendations to the Staff or State Board regarding Code
of Conduct and program policy decisions.
